Tinkerbell Cupcakes

My friend is running in the Tinkerbell half marathon to benefit the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. She has been fundraising for a while and decided to hold a garage sale with all of the proceeds to benefit the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. Laurie and I wanted to help. We made these Tinkerbell Cupcakes for her to sell at her garage sale. I just loved the way they turned out, and best of all they were donated to help a good cause.

How to Make Tinkerbell Cupcakes

You will need:

• Cupcakes
• Best Buttercream Frosting
• Royal Icing
• Americolor Leaf Green Food Coloring
• White & Green Sparkling Sugar Sprinkles
• Wilton 2D Decorating Tip

We used Royal Icing to create the Tinkerbell dresses and wings.  Our recipe is very simple – mix 1 box of powdered sugar with 5 tablespoons of meringue powder and slowly add up to 1/2 cup of hot water until the Royal Icing is the right consistency.  To color the Royal Icing, we used Americolor Leaf Green Food Coloring. This recipe makes quite a bit of Royal Icing so you might want to adjust the measurements depending on how many Tinkerbell Cupcakes you will be making.

We drew a Tinkerbell dress on a piece of printer paper, covered that with parchment paper and used it as a template to create the Royal Icing Tinkerbell dress toppers as you can see in the image above.

For the wings, we found an image of Fairy Wings on Google Images and printed that out.   We used the upper part of this image as the template for the White Royal Icing Tinkerbell wings.  While the Royal Icing was still wet, we added some White & Green Sparkling Sugar sprinkles.  Save a small amount of white royal icing to attach the wings to the dress during the cupcake assembly stage.

We let the Royal Icing dress and wings dry in the open air for 24 hours before we assembled the Tinkerbell Cupcakes.

Now we made up a batch of our delicious Buttercream Frosting.  You can find the recipe and directions here.  We colored the frosting the same color green as the Tinkerbell dress using Americolor Leaf Green food coloring.

Using a pastry bag and a Wilton 2D Decorating Tip we added a pretty swirl of frosting to the Tinkerbell Cupcakes.

Very carefully, press the Tinkerbell dress down into the frosting and the cupcake.  The royal icing toppers are delicate so you might want to make a small slit into the cupcake first to make it easier to press the dress down into the cupcake.

To attach the Tinkebell wings, add a drop of leftover Royal Icing to the bottom of the wings.

And then press the wings onto the back of the Tinkerbell dress.  We did not press the wings down into the cupcake.  The royal icing will harden fairly quickly and the dress and wings will be stable on the Tinkerbell Cupcakes.

We placed the finished Tinkerbell Cupcakes in cupcake holders and let them sit for a couple of hours so that the royal icing attaching the wings to the dress had a chance to set.

We really loved how these Tinkerbell Cupcakes turned out!  This was our first time making a Royal Icing Cupcake Topper and it wasn’t as hard to do as we feared.
