This is our family recipe for Classic Spritz Cookies for the Holidays. These melt-in-your-mouth butter cookies are so pretty and Christmas-y and easier to make than you might think.

This is the recipe that our Great Grandmother always used to make Spritz Cookies.  They are so pretty and buttery and yummy and Christmas-y. And with a splash of flavoring, they can taste like Vanilla or Almond, Peppermint, or even Anais.  We’ve added a little food coloring to up the Holiday quotient too. What some people call old-fashioned, we call Vintage. These cookies will conjure up beautiful memories of Christmases past.

Ingredients you will need

  • Butter: Spritz Cookies are a type of Butter cookie so you will want a good quality butter for this recipe.  We use Sweet Cream Salted buttersoftened to room temperature.
  • Flavoring: The traditional Spritz Cookie flavor is Almond but we like a good ole’ Vanilla flavor.  You can replace the Vanilla Extract with Almond Extract, Peppermint Extract, Lemon Extract or even Anais Extract.
  • Cookie Press:  The iconic shape of a Spritz Cookie comes from a Cookie Press.  You can find them on Amazon or any Big Box store.  
  • Food Coloring: Any Christmas Red and Green food coloring will work. We like the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System.

To make the cookie dough for Classic Spritz Cookie, add the butter and sugar to a mixing bowl and cream them until the dough is light and fluffy (approximately 3-4 minutes.) Add the egg and extract (Almond, Vanilla, Peppermint, Lemon, or Anais) and mix together. Add the salt and half of the flour and mix, just until combined. Add the rest of the flour and finish mixing just until the flour is mixed with the dough. It is important not to over-mix the cookie dough once you add the flour.

Coloring the Dough

Separate the dough into three equal portions.  We used a food scale but you can eyeball it if you don’t have one of those.  Color one portion red and one green and leave the third portion white.  We used the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring in the following combinations to get these pretty Christmas Red and Green:

Red:  2 drops Crimson + 2 drops Red
Green:  3 drops Yellow + 1 drop Blue

Fill the Cookie Press with the Spritz Cookie dough according to the directions for your particular cookie press.  (We used the Flower, Snowflake, and Christmas Tree patterns.)  Press the cookies onto a bare cookie sheet.  You don’t want to line the cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silpat liner or the cookie won’t stick to the cookie sheet and it might not keep its shape when you pull up the cookie press.    

Bake the cookies in an oven preheated to 375 degrees for approximately 6 minutes (or until the edges of the cookies start to LIGHTLY brown.) You don’t want to over-bake these cookies so remove the cookies from the cookie sheet to cool (either on a cooling rack or a sheet of aluminum foil.)
